Businessinsure at Clark Thomson understands that nearly all businesses whether you’re a sole trader, partnership, limited company or charity will require some form of public liability insurance.
We can provide policies for a full range of businesses, trades and circumstances whether you require an annual policy or cover for a one off event.
What is Public Liability Insurance?
Public Liability insurance is a valuable cover and is one of the main insurance covers required to run a business. It provides cover in respect of the legal costs and compensation costs for third party bodily injury and third party property damage if your business is found to be at fault.
What is covered under Public Liability Insurance?
Public liability insurance provides cover for compensation payments for injury to third parties or their property whether the incident occurs on your own premises or at the premises of your customer.
Public Liability insurance also covers the associated medical costs in relation to the claim.
Public Liability insurance provides cover for the cost of replacing or repairing the damaged property
Finally Public liability insurance provides cover for the legal expenses associated in defending a claim
Do I need Public Liability Insurance?
Nearly all businesses whether you are a sole trader, partnership, charity or limited company will likely have a need for Public Liability Insurance. Unlike Employers Liability there is no legal requirement however it is seen as an essential cover for any business not only to protect your business financially but also to allow you to trade.
Whilst this cover is not a legal requirement you may find that your customers will expect you to have this cover in place and will not allow you to work in certain sectors until you hold valid insurance.
The basic questions to ask yourself are Do I come into contact with third parties or customers property? For example:
- Do I have premises which are visited by customers or other professionals such as a shop office or salon
- Do I work in my customers properties ie homes, offices, shops etc
- Do I work in the public ie on roads, paths or building sites.
What is not covered by Public Liability Insurance?
Like most things there are some situations that will not be covered under your insurances.
In the main this will include accidents that involve injury to you (see personal accident) or your own property and will not cover injury to your employees (see employers liability) however you should always ensure you check your documentation for any policy specific exclusions or restrictions.
